Sustainable Trout Lakes Management Plans

Estimated Timeline: 2020-2021 Estimated Cost: $50,000

Trout waters are important water resources that are very sensitive to temperature changes and pollutant loading. The Lower Minnesota River Watershed District (LMRWD) contains several trout waters including the following manmade lakes: Brickyard Clayhole Lake in Chaska, MN, and Quarry Lake in Shakopee, MN. As development of surrounding areas continues, the very specific conditions required by the trout water resources must be maintained.

To ensure sustainability, the Lower Minnesota River Watershed District (LMRWD) is working to develop Sustainable Lake Management Plans for Brickyard Clayhole Lake, Courthouse Lake, and Quarry Lake. Brickyard Clayhole Lake and Courthouse Lake are former clay mines. Brickyard Clayhole Lake is currently managed for recreational activities and is being assessed as a potential trout resource. Courthouse Lake is currently managed as a trout lake. Quarry Lake is a manmade lake created from a limestone quarry operation, designated by the state as a trout lake.

The LMRWD is working with partner cities to gain input and collaboration needed to finalize lake management plans and ensure they are sustainably managed moving forward. Plans will provide recommendations for monitoring activities, surveys and assessments, water budget development, and management strategies. This project will ensure sustainable area development and protection of these valuable trout waters.
